Henrikas Radauskas: Hummingbird

A piece of dandelion down,
A microscopic apparition,
Flew
Into a rainbow.
Out flew
Mottled fog,
A gram of the sun's spectrum,
Not bird,
Not bee,
But wind
Wafting the fragrance
Of flowers.

Tr. Jonas Zdanys. Radauskas was admired by Randell Jarrell, which is no small recommendation. Perhaps the two encountered each other in Washington DC, where Radauskas lived from his emigration in 1949 until his death in 1970, sometimes seeking to pin down the life of this new hemisphere.
